About Bedford, Indiana

The county seat of southern Indiana’s Lawrence County, Bedford is best known as the limestone capital of the world. The town is surrounded by several limestone quarries that produce Indiana or Bedford limestone, highly valued in the construction of buildings and monuments for its durability. Situated in the heart of the Hoosier National Forest, Bedford is 25 minutes south of Indiana University in Bloomington. The town is located 70 miles south of Indianapolis and 70 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. According to numbers from the 2000 census, 13,768 people, 6,054 households, and 3,644 families took up residence in Bedford. The local General Motors plant employs more than 350 workers.
