West Baden and French Lick

West Baden and French Lick

Many know French Lick, Indiana as the hometown of NBA legend Larry Bird. As a collegiate player at Indiana State and throughout his Hall of Fame career with the Boston Celtics, the “Hick from French Lick” put this Orange County town on the map. Prior to Bird’s emergence, French Lick and West Baden were best known for their sulfur springs. These springs, marketed for their medicinal values in the 1800′s, became a destination spot for many celebrities of the day. By the turn of the century, seven railroads transported visitors from around the country to West Baden, and in 1902 the West Baden Springs Hotel opened for business. Now a National Historic Landmark that once again began hosting guests in 2007, the hotel once boasted the largest free-standing dome in the world. French Lick is now home of the French Lick Resort Casino, which opened in November, 2006. The casino offers more than 1,300 slot machines and an array of table games.
